Timo Werner has explained why he found it difficult at Chelsea when Romelu Lukaku signed as his teammate in 2021.

Werner and Lukaku spent just the one season at Stamford Bridge playing in the same squad, scoring a combined total of 26 goals across all competitions between them.

Unfortunately, they both left west London last summer after never really hitting the expected heights.

26-year-old striker Werner, who rejoined RB Leipzig on a permanent deal, is back performing well in Germany.

As for 29-year-old striker Lukaku, he’s currently out on loan at Inter Milan and is having a tough injury-hit campaign so far.

Timo Werner on Romelu Lukaku

Werner had an up and down debut season in English football in the 2020/21 campaign, which ended up with Champions League glory by winning Europe’s top club prize.

However, the former Chelsea man has shared that Lukaku’s arrival at the club just months later changed everything for him in a negative way.

“The biggest problem was he put a striker like Lukaku in front of me in the second season after I won the Champions League by nearly playing every game in the first squad,” Werner told The Sun.

“That was the toughest moment for me to get a player, a very good player, in front of me for €120million.

“Romelu was a big striker and had to play after costing so much and I didn’t feel honoured enough.

“Maybe that was also a reason why I had ups and downs.”

Thomas Tuchel couldn’t get the best out of Werner and Lukaku in the same Chelsea line-up. There was Kai Havertz thrown into the mix as part of the attacking options, too.

It’s interesting to see now with hindsight that the aforementioned duo were scoring the amount of goals that this current side desperately need.

Werner was very much a confidence player during his two years in Chelsea, so it’s no surprise to hear his reaction when the high-profile Lukaku joined him.
