Chelsea striker Timo Werner has talked about who should take the Blues’ penalties after the club missed one, scored one, in last night’s 4-0 Champions League win in Russia.
The 24-year-old has won four penalties in all competitions this season but had to wait until designated penalty-taker Jorginho had been substituted against Krasnodar to get his chance. Mind you, Jorginho had already missed a penalty in the first half.
Having been the go-to penalty taker at previous club RB Leipzig, Werner confidently blasted the ball past Krasnodar’s Matevey Safonov to double the Blues’ lead.
Asked about who should take penalties in the future, the Germany international told the club’s official website: “It depends on the game, not only because Jorginho missed a penalty.
“I am very happy that I scored and we won 4-0.
“It is good for us because the last game was not like this. We didn’t win so easy so it was good – not only for me but for the whole team.”
Lampard was asked a similar question in his post-match press conference after Jorginho missed his second spot kick in a row.
“Jorginho has had an incredibly successful rate of scoring penalties in his career, particularly at Chelsea,” the manager said via the club’s official website.
As a former penalty-taker himself, Lampard said there would be periods when a player missed one or two penalties and he didn’t have a problem with Jorginho’s staccato penalty style.
Lampard plans to make a decision on who takes the next penalty after a discussion with the team.
He said: “I know Timo is very capable of taking penalties as we saw. We have other players who can too so I will talk with the players afterwards to see how we move forward. But we have good players at the club.”
