Timo Werner said he was confused by the lingo of his new English Chelsea teammates during the first few days at the club.
Prior to the summer, the 24-year-old had always played in Bundesliga — with Stuttgart and Leipzig — where he would share the dressing room with mostly German-speaking teammates.
At Chelsea, there are a few players who speak German such as Kai Havertz, Antonio Rudiger, and perhaps Andreas Christensen who had a loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach, but Werner now has to get used to an English-speaking dressing room.
He speaks English well, as shown by his previous interviews, but the Germany international said he had some trouble with a few words often used by his new teammates.
He told The Athletic (via Chelsea’s 5th stand app): “The English players use words that I’d never heard of before coming to Chelsea.
“I’d never heard of “lads” before, which is something that was spoken a lot.
“And the players were always saying ‘gaffer, gaffer’. I thought ‘who are they talking about?’
“I knew that a ‘trainer’ was used for manager or coach over here, but ‘gaffer’ was a completely new one for me and it took me a few days to get up to speed!”
It would be really interesting if Werner starts referring to Lampard as ‘the gaffer’ in his next interview.
