While Chelsea were running out 2-0 winners in the EFL Cup at Stamford Bridge last night, there were a number of big clubs exiting the competition at the Round of 16 stage.

Kai Havertz was given a rare start for Arsenal, although his performance perhaps proved why he has not been a regular this season.

He was particularly poor as the Gunners lost 3-1 at West Ham last night.

Meanwhile, Mason Mount was finding things no easier for Manchester United as they suffered another embarrassing defeat at Old Trafford. They were beaten 3-0 by a much-changed Newcastle United.

In Eddie Howe’s side last night, Lewis Hall was giving a rare chance to impress following his loan with obligation to buy authorised by Chelsea over the summer.

The teenager found the net for the first time at senior level last night, volleying home brilliantly to double their lead at the time.

It looked as if he was going to be given an appearance in central midfield last night, before an injury in the opening minutes saw him pushed back to the left of defence.

Left-back was where he played the majority of his minutes last season for Chelsea, with him becoming a bit of a favourite under Graham Potter.

However, he hardly found himself getting minutes during pre-season under Mauricio Pochettino.

This saw Todd Boehly happy to agree a deal to sell him, with him going on the books as £35m of pure profit due to coming through the academy.

However, his abilities that were on show last night show that they could have made a mistake, especially looking at the future of the left-back role.

Ian Maatsen is still yet to commit his future to the club in the form of a new contract, while Ben Chilwell’s injury problems have not left him yet.
