‘Too early’… Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea are not out of the race to sign £70m player in January

Fabrizio Romano has now refused to rule Chelsea out of the race to sign one player when the transfer window opens again in a couple of weeks’ time.

He told CaughtOffside in his Daily Briefing that the Blues are still yet to make a proper decision on whether they are going to sign Ivan Toney in January, or if they are looking elsewhere for more firepower.

It has been widely claimed that a striker is the number one priority for a signing right now, with a fair few players already being scouted as a target.

They have not been able to watch any of Toney this season due to his ban, however he will be back in action next month and likely hungry to make an impact in the Premier League.

The Blues are not the only team to have an interest in the Englishman, with Arsenal in particular linked with the deal.

While it was reported that the Gunners are ahead in the race to bring him in, Romano has now cleared up that there is currently no frontrunner for the signing.

Chelsea still in for Toney

He said: “There have been reports of Arsenal are now being ahead of Chelsea in the race for Ivan Toney but I’m not ruling any club out at this stage, it’s too early, there’s no decision on any side now.

“Chelsea are taking their time to decide on the strikers situation, so unfortunately now there’s still no clear decision or update. But I’m not ruling any club out for Toney.”

It has been previously claimed by TeamTALK that a fee of around £70m will be enough for him to leave Brentford.

The Blues are linked with a number of other forwards too. They have been reported to be interested in Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres too ahead of what is likely to be a busy January.
