'Top option': Rudi Voller is a massive fan of Chelsea 22-year-old, thinks he could work well with Werner
Rudi Voller has given a big thumbs up to Chelsea’s Kai Havertz when discussing the striker situation in the German national side.
Havertz, 22, is a player whose form with his club showed in his most recent display for his country.
The left-footed forward has cemented his spot in the Chelsea XI with a string of eye-catching displays, and he scored in Germany’s win over Israel on Saturday.
Club and international teammate Timo Werner, 26, was also on the scoresheet over the weekend at home to Israel. However, his Blues form back at Stamford Bridge has been underwhelming.
German legend Voller answered with Havertz when asked who he’d pick as the number nine for Germany. He did give a nod towards Werner, though, by suggesting the pair could work nicely together in a forward line.
“Without the classic centre-forward, Kai is currently the top option in my view. He comes closest to a nine in his header power. I could also imagine him together with Werner, who is always needed with his speed,” Voller told Bild.
Of course, the duo have played a lot of football together at club and international level. It would be a fairly new idea to give them a run of starts as a strike pairing, though.
It’s Werner that’s mainly got the nod as the central striker in recent times for Germany, whereas Havertz has the versatility to fill several offensive positions.
For Havertz, he’s showing now at Chelsea on a regular basis he can thrive as the sole forward leading the line. Pat Nevin even thinks he’s been the club’s best player since Roman Abramovich got sanctioned.
