‘Top player’: Jack Wilshere says he sees some similarities between himself and current Chelsea star

Jack Wilshere agreed that there are a few parallel qualities between himself and Chelsea forward Mason Mount.

Wilshere tried to answer a question from Stadium Astro about which current player is built in his own mould.

Jack of not-all trades

The 30-year-old, who is playing for Danish side Aarhus Gymnastikforening at the moment, remains something of a unique hybrid amongst English midfielders.

Arguably his most influential position on the pitch comes between the space between defence and midfield, possessing the ability to work within minuscule gaps.

He can evade an opponent with grace and poise, but also pick a pass at the right time to move an attack forward.

There still aren’t many like the Arsenal academy graduate hailing from British soil, although the pool of talent is growing.

Arguably the two most like him are Mount and Manchester City’s Phil Foden.

“It’s tough to answer that. I think the obvious one and a lot of people say to me is Phil Foden,” said Wilshere.

“But, then he’s different to me. I think he’s a bit quicker than me. He’s physically not as aggressive as I was.

“But I think he’s quicker so he doesn’t have to get too close to players. He can give himself a yard and beat a player, whereas I had to get closer to players.”

How much is Wilshere like Mount?

Foden certainly has a similar swagger to Wilshere, with a delicate left foot to match.

Yet whilst Wilshere is very much a central player, the City starlet can cover almost every area across the forward line and pretty much any in midfield.

Mount meanwhile operates well from the right or left of a front three, but can also manage equally as efficiently in a slightly deeper role.

“Maybe a little bit. I can see what you mean,” continued Wilshere when proposed the Chelsea gem as a comparable component.

“He is a little bit different in terms of, I feel he is more a player who’s going to pass rather than dribble. But yeah, he is a top player as well.”

Mount probably uses his energy more efficiently than Wilshere, plus provides that added attacking incentive of arriving into the box.

However, the two Englishmen are alike in the sense of being confident on the ball, linking up with other teammates and driving their sides up field.

Just imagine a hybrid of Mason, Jack and Phil altogether… we think that would be called Frank Lampard!
