Troy Deeney picks £25m Chelsea player over Manchester United star in Team of the Week

Troy Deeney has named a couple of Chelsea players in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Chelsea beat Bournemouth 1-0 on Saturday, thanks to a late strike from Christopher Nkunku.

It was set up by Jadon Sancho, who made a huge impact when he came on. However, neither player managed to make Deeney’s Team of the Week.

Instead, Deeney went with Moises Caicedo and another Chelsea star when choosing players from that game.

Troy Deeney on Robert Sanchez and Andre Onana

Robert Sanchez and Andre Onana both saved penalties and kept clean sheets for Chelsea and Manchester United respectively over the weekend.

However, Deeney went for the former when picking his BBC Sport Team of the Week and explained why.

“He made a great save from Evanilson’s penalty, although I think he got stitched up with the back-pass that led to it,” the former Premier League forward said. “All in all, a good night’s work for him.

“He’s come under a lot of pressure — it was between him and Andre Onana but I decided to go with Sanchez because he’s had stick.”

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola also praised Sanchez following his side’s 1-0 loss against Chelsea.

Robert Sanchez deserves Team of the Week inclusion

While Onana certainly did perform well against Southampton, it is not an injustice for Deeney to include Sanchez in his Team of the Week instead of him.

The 26-year-old, who cost Chelsea £25m when they signed him from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer, made so many important saves against Bournemouth.

In total, he made seven, according to Sofascore. It is a game that the Blues would have lost without him.

Now it is about Sanchez doing this on a consistent basis. The Spaniard does not always look comfortable in goal.

Gary Neville thought Sanchez looked worried during Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City at the start of the Premier League campaign.

He looked anything but at the Vitality Stadium and that needs to remain the case going forward. If it does and Sanchez can put in more performances like the one against Iraola’s men, then the Spain international will start to look like a bargain at £25m.

His next challenge will come against West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday.
