Tuchel admits he might have made Chelsea team selection mistake against Everton

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said he might have made a mistake by not making more changes in the team in Sunday’s defeat to Everton.

Except for Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s inclusion to replace injured N’Golo Kante, Tuchel kept the same starting eleven he used in the draw against Manchester United.

To be fair, Loftus-Cheek did remarkably well in ball transition at Goodison Park, but it was pretty apparent that some of the Chelsea players ran out of steam in the second half.

While Tuchel argued that he wanted to show faith in his players, it might have been a mistake.

“We have one clean sheet over the last four matches, and it is far too easy to score against us,” the German told BBC Sport after the game.

“We can’t stop doing individual mistakes. We struggle to have repetitive top performances. Today was an OK performance, but OK is not enough.

“We were not on the highest level.

“We trusted the team. Maybe we could have changed more.

“That is something I will reflect on personally.”

Aside from the lack of clean sheets in recent games, the Blues have also struggled at the other end of the pitch.

In fact, they have missed five big chances in the last three games, including two against Everton.

Tuchel used the same front three in these games; the strike pairing of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz with Mason Mount playing behind them as a number 10.
