Tuchel admits he tracked Chelsea star for two years before becoming his manager

Thomas Tuchel admitted to the Fifth Stand that he had kept an eye on Callum Hudson-Odoi at Chelsea ever since he was in charge of Paris Saint Germain.

Hudson-Odoi has found his feet again by becoming a regular feature under the Chelsea coach.

This should come as little surprise considering the length of time Tuchel confessed to tracing Hudson-Odoi’s trajectory.

“I became aware of Callum during my days at Paris,” he said.

“I’d say probably two years ago. His name popped up on my radar because, clearly, he had so much potential.”

This would’ve taken Tuchel back to the 2018/19 season where Hudson-Odoi was playing some of the best football of his senior career.

Maurizio Sarri was the man in Chelsea’s dugout who tried to use the 20-year-old as frequently as possible.

He managed six goals and seven in assists in 29 appearances that could’ve been more until his campaign was cut short by a ruptured Achilles tendon.

These injury woes continued into the following campaign that again cut his game time to much less than Frank Lampard would’ve desired.

Now seemingly problem-free, Hudson-Odoi started in four of Tuchel’s first five fixtures, having only begun three of the previous seven under Lampard.

This is not the only occasion a Chelsea man was on the radar of their German manager. Tuchel reportedly wanted Antonio Rudiger (RMC) and Jorginho (Daily Mail) with him at PSG.

N’Golo Kante was another Tuchel wanted to take for a while, admitting that he was ‘desperate’ to have France’s World Cup winner in his teams of the past (Chelsea YouTube).
