UEFA have confirmed that Chelsea are among the 19 clubs that will be monitored closely by its Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) First Chamber in the upcoming FFP period after barely fulfilling the break-even requirement.
The European football governing body have fined eight clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Juventus, for failing to comply with the break-even requirement.
UEFA, however, have also warned 19 clubs, including Chelsea, who have technically fulfilled the requirement but only managed to do so thanks to the application of Covid-19 emergency measures and/or because they benefited from historical positive break-even results.
In other words, these 19 clubs would have not been able to comply with the requirement if UEFA had not applied Covid-19 emergency measures for 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic or relaxed the regulations by extending the financial period from three to five years.
UEFA stated that starting from 2023, these exceptional Covid deductions and considerations of historical financial results will no longer be possible.
The 19 clubs have been asked to provide additional financial information and will be closely monitored in the next period.
“The goal, of course, is that the clubs’ overall financial situation is in compliance with the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations – Edition 2022 in coming years,” the official statement reads.

Being the world’s highest-spending club after splashing £255.3million in this transfer window (Deloitte, via The Guardian), Chelsea could find themselves in a difficult spot in the next few years.
In their latest available financial statement (for the year ended on 30 June 2021) Chelsea confirmed they recorded a loss of £153.4m (via the club’s official website).
But the Blues are now under new ownership who can hopefully help the club increase its revenue while still maintaining investment in top talents.
