‘Uncomfortable’… Jason Cundy claims £50m Chelsea player didn’t look fit enough against Liverpool

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell endured a very difficult game yesterday in the defeat against Liverpool.

That is according to Jason Cundy.

Ben Chilwell, along with most of his Blues teammates, could be highlighted for a poor display in Wednesday’s 4-1 loss away to Liverpool in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old left-back is still working his way back to full fitness after a few months out with a hamstring injury. Based on last night’s showing, he may still be someway from maximum fitness.

He started the league match at Anfield and lasted 45 minutes before being substituted off at half-time.

Reacting to Chilwell’s first-half performance versus Liverpool, Cundy suggested that Chilwell didn’t look fit enough to cope with the hosts.

It was a very tough evening for Chelsea, particularly in the opening 45 minutes, with Liverpool swarming the visitors from all angles.

Cundy said via Chelsea’s 5th Stand App (9:22am, 31 January): “I have to say Ben Chilwell looked uncomfortable throughout the whole of that time. Fitness levels clearly caught up with him in a game of this intensity.”

Chilwell will want to quickly forget the Liverpool display, just like many of those around him in the dressing room.

The £50 million defender (Sky Sports) should be cut some slack given his individual situation, but the question marks around the defensive side of his game won’t go anywhere.

Speaking via Sky Sports last month, Gary Neville described Chilwell as an injury waiting to happen.

We’re hoping that the club’s vice-captain can get a run of games from now until the end of the season without injury interruptions.

If he starts regularly in the Chelsea XI, we’ll see the best from him as an athletic full-back that’s great up and down the wing.
