Premier League legend Michael Owen has described former Chelsea star Mason Mount as a top-class player.

Chelsea sold Mason Mount to Manchester United in the summer and Owen, speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel FIVE, thinks the attacking midfielder was a good signing for his old club.

Mount has not got off to a great start at Old Trafford, though.

Since joining Erik ten Hag’s side, he is actually yet to score a goal or provide an assist in the Premier League.

Mason Mount top-class

Despite Mount’s early struggles at Old Trafford, Owen still thinks he was a solid addition to United’s squad.

Discussing the 24-year-old on FIVE, the former United and Liverpool striker said: “Mason Mount is obviously a top-class player. He is a very good signing. I think they paid the going rate. I think it is a decent chunk of money, but he is young, he is English, he is going to be there for a long time.

“He is obviously a very good player. I don’t think anyone can complain about that signing. I think it is a very solid signing. You know what you are going to get.”

Chelsea had to sell top-class Mason Mount

In the end, Chelsea found themselves in a position where they had to let Mount go.

For whatever reason, a new contract was not an option and the Englishman’s existing deal had entered its final year.

The Blues were at risk of losing Mount for nothing next summer, so putting him on the market was the logical step to take.

It would have been ideal if a new contract had been sorted because Mount is a top-class player when he is at his best.

Back in the 2021/22 season, Mount came up with 21 goal contributions in 32 Premier League appearances. But both the England international and Chelsea clearly felt it was time to go their separate ways. It is a shame, but what’s done is done now.
