This is despite it being reported that RB Salzburg are expecting their man to stay at the club, having been in no contact with the Blues over a potential move.
Over the bank holiday weekend, it was reported that the 45-year-old had verbally agreed to take the role at Chelsea, which had been vacant following the summer exodus of board members.
This had left Todd Boehly to complete most of the work behind the scenes, and his inexperience of the sport creates a number of issues with that being the case.
Despite Salzburg’s resistance at this stage, Law has claimed that their stance is mostly being seen as negotiation tactics, and he will still eventually take the job.
Freund still favourite for Chelsea
He said: “Salzburg insistence they expect Christoph Freund to stay viewed as being part of the negotiation process and a sign they will want compensating.
“Stance could slow process down but Freund still very much seen as most likely appointment for Chelsea sporting director as this stage.”
The situation will no doubt remind fans of the Marc Cucurella scenario, when Brighton went out of their way to make a club statement that they hadn’t agreed a fee with the Blues for a deal.
Of course, just hours later a fee was agreed, and supporters will be hoping that there is a similar final outcome to this ongoing saga.
With most reports claiming the Blues want someone in place to fill the role before this winter’s World Cup, the club will be safe in the knowledge that the days and the weeks before the big tournament are passing quickly.
With Freund responsible for the discovery of Erling Haaland and Sadio Mane at the highest level, his credentials seemingly fit what the club want perfectly.
