Thomas Tuchel revealed that Jorginho responded well in Chelsea training to Italy’s recent heartache.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Brentford, Tuchel explained that his midfielder has not let the last week affect his efforts at club level.

Italian devastation

Jorginho would be excused for being completely distracted following the latest round of international fixtures.

This time seven days ago, the 30-year-old and his compatriots were gearing up for a huge World Cup qualifying showdown with North Macedonia.

After finishing second behind Switzerland in their group, the Azzurri needed another round of matches to try and reach the tournament held in Qatar.

Despite struggling since winning the European Championships, Roberto Mancini’s men were still the favourites to defeat Macedonia on home soil.

But football rarely moves in a straight line.

Aleksandar Trajkovski’s goal in the 92nd minute sent the Macedonians into absolute bedlam and a lot of the Italians into tears.

Amongst the sorry state of blue shirts was Jorginho, who could only hide his head in the shirt once the full-time whistle blew.

Keep that chin up, Jorgi

Italy will now miss out on their second successive World Cup, signalling a huge fall from grace for the Euros holders.

However, professional mode clearly kicked in pretty quickly for Chelsea’s metronome controller.

“To be very honest, I did not speak a lot with him about that because what could I say to make his pain go away? Nothing,” admitted Tuchel.

“I think, like always, it’s our job to create an environment and atmosphere where the players feel welcome and safe, no matter what happens outside.

“Of course, this happens in sport and it feels horrible for him personally and for his teammates. But here, it’s a safe place for him.

“He was very, very strong in training I have to say. A very good response. He came in one day earlier than he needed to be.

“That’s why I had the feeling he loved to be back and be in this environment, because it’s a positive environment.”

Although the pain must still be healing, Jorginho cannot allow his emotions to overwhelm him.

He is set to play a big part for Chelsea between now and the end of the season, considering the team are still fighting on three different fronts.

Whilst the Premier League title remains quite far out of reach, an 11-point gap with a game in hand on Manchester City is not the worst position to be in.

Then there’s the defence of the Champions League, which restarts next Wednesday at home to Real Madrid.

Chuck in the FA Cup for good measure and Jorginho should have enough to keep his mind occupied.
