Villarreal boss Emery expects to face weakened Chelsea team in UEFA Super Cup

Villarreal manager Unai Emery believes Thomas Tuchel would not be able to field his strongest Chelsea team in Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup.

Both Chelsea and Villarreal will travel to Belfast for the Super Cup in a few days.

The Blues, as the Champions League winners, are the favourites to win, but Emery is rather optimistic about his team’s chances.

“It’s an opportunity to win a title against Chelsea,” the former Arsenal manager told Villarreal’s official website.

“We’re facing the Champions League winners, which means that they are the best team in the world this season.

“We have a competitive spirit to go into the game with guarantees.

“Chelsea have internationals with Spain and Italy who didn’t get back until this week.

“Their starting XI will not be the same as the Champions League final. Maybe some of their strongest players won’t start.

“We will analyse them based on how we are.”

Well, Chelsea have still registered the players who arrived late for the pre-season in their squad, but it remains unclear whether they would be ready to play.

At least eight first-team players, including Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Thiago Silva, and Mason Mount, have yet to feature in any pre-season game so far.

In comparison, Villarreal only had two late pre-season arrivals in Gerard Moreno and Pau Torres who were involved at the Euro 2020 with Spain.
