Wayne Rooney says he’s spotted something small at Chelsea that really annoys him

Wayne Rooney has made a very interesting observation about the Chelsea players who do not make the matchday squad.

It is something that Rooney first noticed during his playing days when he used to travel to Stamford Bridge with Manchester United.

Last month, Rooney also discussed what he expects from Chelsea next season, with the United legend confident that they will have a strong campaign because of Xabi Alonso’s arrival and a lack of European football.

Wayne Rooney wants to see absent Chelsea players in suits on matchday

According to Rooney, his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson was big on United players who did not make the matchday squad wearing suits.

It is not something that Chelsea enforced in his day, nor is it something that they are pushing now. However, Rooney has admitted that he would like to see Chelsea players dress similarly.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the retired striker said: “Alex Ferguson used to say to us that when you go into someone else’s stadium, you want to leave a good impression. And so I think it’s gone away from that. I used to really like that.

“When you play Chelsea away, and the players weren’t playing, they’re all in their own clothes, sat behind the dugout. And I just think it didn’t leave a good impression, whereas you see Man United and they’re all in the suits. And I still think I would like it to go back to that.”

With a new manager in Alonso arriving at Stamford Bridge, it will be interesting to see what ideas he brings with him.

Chelsea fans have already been discussing whether the Spaniard will use a back three or back four next season.

He had great success with the former, leading Bayer Leverkusen to their first ever Bundesliga title in 2024.

The arrival of some fresh faces will also be expected. Chelsea are currently being linked with Jeremie Frimpong, Alonso’s former right wing-back at Leverkusen.

Chelsea have more important things to worry about than what their players wear

The truth is, Chelsea supporters will not care about what their players put on. The club have bigger concerns right now such as the team’s poor disciplinary record last season.

Chelsea still do not have a front-of-shirt sponsor either, while there are a couple of key players who want to leave west London this summer.

That is what will be on the club’s mind, not how players should be dressing on matchday. Chelsea fans will not be on the same page with Rooney here.
