Enzo Maresca recently gave Chelsea fans an injury update which had the potential to derail their whole season at the midway stage.

The Italian stated that there was a chance Wesley Fofana could be out of action until the end of the season after picking up an issue in the 3-0 win against Aston Villa at the start of December.

Worries were already starting to rise after the Frenchman had not been seen in action in the last month, and the injury issues have continued with a long-term problem for Benoit Badiashile too.

Wesley Fofana gives positive injury update

This has seen Maresca forced to experiment with his defensive options, and even hand a first Premier League start to teenager Josh Acheampong in the draw against Crystal Palace.

While the youngster impressed at Selhurst Park, Fofana’s absence was felt again as they conceded late, ultimately dropping two points.

The manager’s injury update may have been bad news for Chelsea fans, however the player himself has issued a more positive prediction based on his own belief.

Fofana told L’Equipe that he is confident that he will be ahead of schedule, and return to action at some stage in March.

The former Leicester City man is more than familiar with injuries now since his move to Stamford Bridge, with him racking up plenty of games missed in that time.

Talk has begun as to whether Chelsea would consider signing a new centre-back as a result of the injury news, with the transfer window now being open.

They have already recalled youngster Aaron Anselmino after loaning him to Boca Juniors after signing him, however it feels as if Chelsea will not be able to call on him as a genuine first team option yet.
