Mason Mount made a clear effort to console his Chelsea co-worker Kalidou Koulibaly following the pairs meeting at the World Cup yesterday.

Club colleagues Mount and Koulibaly were turned enemies for 90 minutes as England encountered Senegal in the round of 16.

Only one half of the Stamford Bridge duo ended the evening with a smile on their face.

Despite a strong start from Senegal, Gareth Southgate’s side swept their African opponents out of the tournament with general ease.

Goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka secured the victory, with reported Todd Boehly target Jude Bellingham playing a starring role once again.

The Three Lions roared into the quarter-final, setting up a tantalising showdown with France on Saturday.

Although many England fans were already visualising the threat of Kylian Mbappe and co. before a ball was kicked last night, reality only really sunk in when the full-time whistle blew.

Senegal’s dreams of causing further shock in Qatar crashed down to earth, as the players stood, or even sat, rather solemnly on the pitch.

Gracious in victory, Mount was spotted embracing Koulibaly, an act of support and emotion for his Chelsea teammate.

Koulibaly will now return to South West London along with Edouard Mendy, where they must watch the rest of the World Cup from their sofas.

Will they be rooting for Mount, Conor Gallagher and Raheem Sterling?

Or maybe Mateo Kovacic with Croatia, Cesar Azpilicueta’s Spain or Thiago Silva and Brazil?
