Gary Lineker has criticised Chelsea on social media this evening over the FA Cup ticket saga the club has been involved in today.

Of course, the controversy and speculation around sanctions and a potential new ownership at Stamford Bridge isn’t quite enough drama on the rollercoaster right now that is being a Chelsea fan.

The Blues released in a statement today (Tuesday) that they put forward a request to the FA for this Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final away tie at Middlesbrough to be played behind closed doors. This request came as a result of the sanctions imposed on Chelsea resulting in them not being allowed to sell any extra away tickets for the weekend’s match.

Championship side Middlesbrough were firm with their response this afternoon, claiming it was an unfair ask for their supporters to be banned from inside the Riverside Stadium due to Chelsea-related sanctions.

As a result, it’s since been announced Chelsea have removed their request for the game to be played behind closed doors. There are ongoing talks still between the FA, Chelsea and the government with regards to Blues supporters attending matches, but by sticking to sanction rules.

Lineker believes the London club have definitely made the right call withdrawing the request. However, he’s not impressed by the decision in the first place after hearing the news today.

“So Chelsea have now removed their request for the FA Cup tie at Middlesbrough to be played behind closed doors. The right move. Not sure whose idea it was to make the request in the first place. What on earth were they thinking?” Lineker wrote on Twitter.

Heads up Chelsea fans

Yes, it’s pure chaos right now off the pitch.

Let’s all hope we can look back at this in a few weeks with a new ownership and a clean slate.

Simon Jordan, along with many others, were not impressed with today’s ticket saga.

Thankfully, a conclusion has been reached with regards to Boro supporters, who are going to be even more determined for the cup tie now.
