The rollercoaster that is supporting Chelsea took another sharp turn yesterday for fans when the squad was announced who would take on Manchester City.

Raheem Sterling was nowhere to be seen in the matchday squad, with injury not being the reason he was left out.

Sterling’s camp put out a statement straight after the side was announced to say they were seeking clarity over his position, and that he was expecting to be named in the squad in some capacity.

Pundits such as Jamie Carragher have come out to blast the England international for his decision to say what his camp said, and supporters will likely not be best pleased with his comments being so close to kick-off of the new season.

It has been claimed for some time that the decision makers at Stamford Bridge have been keen to move Sterling on, although his high wages have seen that prove a problem.

Raheem Sterling’s Chelsea future in doubt

However, an update since yesterday’s controversial moment also does not spell good news for the experienced star.

Sources have told CaughtOffside that Joao Felix is getting closer to a move to Chelsea, and this will have a big impact on Sterling’s future at the club.

There is already plenty of competition places on the wings at Stamford Bridge this season, with both Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk not able to get on the pitch at all yesterday.

Plethora of wide options for Chelsea

Pedro Neto was brought on for his Chelsea debut, and certainly looked bright before City began to dictate proceedings in the final few moments.

With the plethora of games coming their way in multiple competitions to start the season, there will no doubt be opportunities for options to prove themselves.

However, it remains to be seen if that extends to Sterling, with it yet to be seen how his actions go down with the rest of the first team squad.
