Gary Cahill has suggested that Chelsea do not have a core like some of the teams that came before Mauricio Pochettino’s current side.
In contrast to the Chelsea of today, Gary Cahill was part of successful teams at Stamford Bridge, and the former defender has put that success down to the Blues having a group of players to rely on at the time.
Discussing the difference between the Chelsea sides he played in and the one now, he told Hayters TV: “When we were successful here, we had the core of the team and then we added one or two players to that and that’s a lot easier to adapt those players into the system and the football club.”

Based on how they started this season, Pochettino’s men will struggle to replicate any of the successes Cahill achieved when he played for Chelsea.
They have won just one of their first four Premier League games so far, losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest in their last outing just before the international break.
Too much instability at Chelsea
Since Chelsea were taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, they have brought in so many new players.
With constant change and a lot of those signings yet to deliver, the Blues have not been able to assemble a team that has a reliable core of footballers like in Cahill’s day.

Mykhailo Mudryk, for example, is yet to score a goal for Chelsea despite having joined the club in January.
There is still enough time for the Ukrainian and the rest of the Blues’ recent signings to come good and give their club a new spine. Until then, there could be more surprise defeats, such as the one against Steve Cooper’s side.
