Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is being linked with the England job after Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down.
Gareth Southgate took England to the Euro 2024 final, their second successive European Championship final, but has decided to resign as Three Lions boss following defeat against Spain. It has opened the door for a few coaches who used to work for Chelsea.
In terms of potential replacements, the FA have many good names to look at, which obviously includes Thomas Tuchel.
Before Southgate’s exit, it was claimed that Tuchel would be considered for England. And his chances of getting the gig have now emerged.

Thomas Tuchel interested in England job
Tuchel is a top club manager. It was only last season when he was managing one of the biggest teams in the world in Bayern Munich, while the German also won the Champions League while at Stamford Bridge a few years ago.
Tuchel is thought to be interested in taking over from Southgate, while there is also a chance that Mauricio Pochettino could be the next England manager, but journalist Nizaar Kinsella says the German is not expecting a phone call from the FA.
In a report on BBC Sport, Kinsella said: “Sources close to Tuchel have told me that he remains interested in the role.
“However, he is not expecting to be contacted by the FA and is considered an outsider given the position of the other candidates.”
Thomas Tuchel familiar with players in England squad
If the FA do decide to hire Tuchel, the good news is that the 50-year-old should be well aware of the strengths and weaknesses of England’s players.
He has come up against them and even managed quite a few names after his time in charge of Chelsea.
Conor Gallagher, Raheem Sterling, Reece James and Ben Chilwell are all players who were part of his Blues squad, for example. He also worked with Harry Kane at Bayern.
All things considered, then, Tuchel should probably be high on England’s list. However, that does not appear to be the case for whatever reason.
That is quite disappointing for the likes of James and Chilwell, who were both snubbed by Southgate for the Euros. Appointing Tuchel as the next England boss would boost their chances of earning a recall and becoming key players for the Three Lions ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
