Chelsea have had a relatively successful season so far. Following a summer transfer ban, and the arrival of inexperienced manager Frank Lampard, many fans were lacking optimism.
How wrong the doubters were. Chelsea have qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League and are currently sat inside the top-four. There a whole host of Chelsea players in the conversation for player of the year so far, and it is hard to choose just one.
Jorginho has perhaps had the greatest redemption. After coming in for huge criticism under Maurizio Sarri, the Italian has become a key part of this Chelsea side. His ability to control a game and direct the play is something few players hold and has been crucial to the way Lampard’s side have played this season.
Christian Pulisic has been a revelation since making his way into the Chelsea side. He initially struggled for minutes but has been in electric form in the latter part of the year.
Another man who has to be mentioned is Tammy Abraham. The striker has scored 13 goals and provided four assists in all competitions this season and no one would complain if he were named as Chelsea’s player of the season so far.
However, the club’s one summer acquisition deserves that title slightly more than his teammates. Mateo Kovacic has been exceptional for Chelsea so far this season, and has formed a brilliant partnership with Jorginho. His ability to win the ball back from deep and turn defence into attack is unrivalled.
The midfielder can escape from the tightest of spots, and recently notched his first two goals for the club. He has won an impressive 241 duels in the Premier League and is a pivotal part of Lampard’s midfield. Without him, Chelsea do not look like the same side.
