‘Why sign these players?’: Darren Bent questions why Chelsea went out and bought two players

Darren Bent has questioned Chelsea’s thought process when they signed attackers Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku.

First of all, German forward Werner joined from RB Leipzig 18 months ago and hasn’t lived up to the hype. The 25-year-old speedster’s full of energy and has been part of a winning squad, but 18 goals in 73 Chelsea appearances is miles off the kind of return they expected.

Meanwhile, 28-year-old striker Lukaku joined from Inter Milan at the start of this season with the task of becoming the club’s goal machine. However, he’s received major criticism for his overall level of performances, despite chipping in with 10 goals this campaign.

Bent is left puzzled as to why Chelsea are unable to get the best out of either or play to their strengths.

“You look at the two centre-forwards they’ve bough recently, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku. Their biggest attributes are their pace. If you’re not going to play that way why sign these players?” Bent told talkSPORT.

Chelsea stuck in cycle

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea surely don’t want to be in a position next summer when they’ve got to search the market for a big-money signing for the centre-forward role again.

They’ve got loanee Armando Broja in line to return to the group, but they need the likes of Lukaku, Werner and Kai Havertz to come good.

There could be a significant loss if the club are forced to cash in on attackers that aren’t delivering.

Chelsea have enough big games coming up from now until the end of the season, including the Champions League and Carabao Cup final this week.

Tuchel’s got a few months to try solve getting the best out of either Lukaku or Werner. Clearly, both have fragile confidences and need help unlocking the form that saw them light up other divisions across Europe.
