Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed that Frank Lampard being back at Chelsea may convince Mason Mount to sign a new contract.

He told GiveMeSport that the pair enjoy a strong relationship, and a good run of form overseen by the temporary manager may convince him to extend his stay.

Talks have currently come to a standstill regarding Mount’s contract status, with just over a year left on his current deal.

For the first time in his long Chelsea career, there is a real chance that the England international could be on the move from Stamford Bridge.

He is not short of reported admirers too. Liverpool and Bayern Munich are just two of the sides linked with signing him.

Injuries have seen him unable to affect things on the pitch recently either. His issues will see him miss the Champions League game against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Despite things looking gloomy right now, Phillips has claimed the presence of Lampard back at the club could be a boost in getting him to stay.

He said: “I think it will definitely help [Mount’s contract situation]; Lampard and Mount have been friends since he took him to Derby County on loan from Chelsea. They’ve always had a good relationship and I understand that they’ve kept in touch.

They talk quite a bit and they are friends; Lampard could certainly help with that. Especially if Lampard has a good run, turns our fortunes around and somehow manages to land the job on a permanent, then I think it could certainly convince Mason Mount to sign that contract.”

Mount will be desperate to return to fitness as soon as possible to remind some of those fans who have turned on him exactly how good he is, and why he was named the club’s player of the year in the last two seasons.
