Moises Caicedo may no longer be at the World Cup, but he heads back to Chelsea after a very impressive tournament on a personal level.
Moises Caicedo enjoyed an individually brilliant, milestone-heavy 2026 World Cup campaign with Ecuador, even though his tournament ended in a tight 2–0 Round of 32 defeat to Mexico.
The Chelsea midfielder’s exceptional leadership and impressive performances saw him officially named his nation’s permanent captain mid-tournament after Enner Valencia stepped down.

Moises Caicedo keeps up with Michael Olise
It’s not often that Moises Caicedo and creativity are mentioned in the same sentences, as he tends to be more of a destroyer at Chelsea.
However, at the 2026 World Cup, he operated in a slightly more advanced position at times.
The striking thing to take away from his performances is the fact that, as of the 1st of July, Caicedo is ranked second for expected assists per game with 1.9. In comparison, in first place with 2.2 expected assists per game is France’s Michael Olise, who has the most assists in the whole competition.
Caicedo didn’t actually lay on any assists at the World Cup, but this has opened up a whole new area of the midfielder’s game that can be utilised much more at Chelsea.
With Marco Palestra officially in the building, does he instantly start over Reece James or Malo Gusto?👀
Having signed Valentin Barco, who can operate as a deep-lying midfielder and with Enzo Fernandez’s future still up in the air, perhaps we could see Caicedo in a slightly more advanced role.
During his time with Brighton, Moises Caicedo recorded just two assists in 45 Premier League appearances, whilst at Chelsea, he’s produced six assists across 106 Premier League matches.
