Glen Johnson has urged former club Chelsea to try sign Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.

Dumfries, 26, is an exciting full-back that’s just had a fantastic World Cup tournament.

He was part of a Netherlands side that were knocked out in the quarter-final stage against Argentina on penalties, but he shone as one of his nation’s best players in Qatar.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Dumfries has now had his head turned by interest from Chelsea in him.

He’s reportedly (InterLive) got a £43million valuation on his head and is still under contract at the San Siro with Inter until 2025.

Chelsea should sign Denzel Dumfries

Glen Johnson reckons that Inter Milan’s flying wing-back may be a great addition to Chelsea’s squad.

In particular, he thinks the 26-year-old may be ideal competition for Blues star Reece James on the right side of defence.

When asked if Dumfries would be a good signing for Chelsea, Johnson told GGRecon: “He’s a good player that would suit Chelsea. It would be great for Chelsea to have two top players for every position and they’d be signing him to keep Reece James on his toes and they can battle it out to be the club’s first-choice right-back. It could be a deal that’s not too expensive as well, and he’s certainly a good player.”

Dumfries is a perfect player for a wing-back system with his pace, power and athleticim.

If Potter wants to move forward with a back three and wing-backs, Inter Milan’s rapid defender looks tailor-made for the system.

However, convincing any top right-back to join when they know James is already at the club should be a massive hurdle.

In our view, James should be the first name on the team sheet when fit.
