‘Would definitely want to come’: Glen Johnson now confident Chelsea can sign £150m player ahead of Arsenal

Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson thinks his old side are capable of landing Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

According to FootballTransfers, Chelsea are leading the race to sign Victor Osimhen over Arsenal, who are one other club who are also thought to be interested in the striker.

When asked by GGRecon if Osimhen is the best signing the Blues could make in the centre-forward position, Johnson said: “Yes, I believe he is. This signing would be realistic and he’s already played for a top team like Napoli, where he won the Serie A title last season.

“He would potentially cost less than somebody like Ivan Toney because buying players from other Premier League clubs is super expensive. The player would definitely want to come to Chelsea in my opinion and I believe it’s a realistic deal for them to secure.”

The Nigerian was brilliant for Napoli last season, scoring 26 goals in 32 league appearances, but it is not a shock that he has remained at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium and not gone to a bigger club.

In March, Corriere dello Sport reported that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis wanted £150m for his prized asset.

Victor Osimhen’s price tag may not scare off Chelsea

If Osimhen’s valuation is still £150m in January or next summer, that does not necessarily mean Chelsea will cool their interest in the Nigeria international.

They have not been afraid to throw that kind of money at Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, midfielders who are probably not going to win you games week in, week out.

With that in mind, then, if Chelsea believe that Osimhen is a striker who can do that, perhaps they will try and sign him at whatever the cost.

And if he can fire Mauricio Pochettino’s side to a league title just like what he recently done with Napoli, then it will be money well spent. But there are a lot of ifs at this moment in time.
