Wright says Werner’s poor goalscoring form a worry for Chelsea despite Everton win

Ian Wright said Chelsea should be worried that Timo Werner kept “snatching chances” that could have helped his confidence during the 2-0 win over Everton.

The Blues are now on an 11-game unbeaten run in all competitions after the win on Monday night.

Impressively, Edouard Mendy faced just one shot on target throughout the game, which seems to be a trend under Tuchel.

Wright said Chelsea showed improvement in terms of chance creation under the new manager but believes Werner’s poor finishing must have frustrated the manager.

“Unfortunately for him [Tuchel], Timo Werner missed another couple of chances,” the former Arsenal striker told Premier League Productions (via Metro).

“Converting those chances only gives confidence to the team and probably him as well.

“He just seems to be snatching chances that if he could take them it would then give Chelsea the confidence that they are playing well from back to front.”

However, Wright also thinks Werner will have patience from the club given his incredible goalscoring record at RB Leipzig, although the signs have not been very positive.

“The fact is he’ll probably get the time because of the outlay on him and what they’ve invested in him,” he added.

“We know he’s capable of scoring he does it in the Bundesliga and at international level.

“But for some reason, it’s not quite clicking and gelling as well as we thought he would do at Chelsea right now.

“It’s not like they’re not making chances. That would be the worry for me.”

It is baffling how Werner often got himself into a goalscoring position with runs and movements of an elite forward, only to strike it wide or straight to the goalkeepers.

He has not scored in five consecutive appearances now (four starts), after ending his 14-game goal drought in Newcastle win last month.

It might have been a confidence issue, but as Wright said, Werner did not really help himself by missing those relatively easier chances.
