There is now a growing optimism that Enzo Fernandez will stay at Chelsea this summer, however Xabi Alonso learned during Argentina vs Cape Verde how not to use him.

Despite Fernandez’s public desire to join Real Madrid, the Spanish giants have made it public knowledge that they have entered no serious discussions to sign him this summer.

Chelsea have set a £120m price tag on the midfielder, which has seemingly put off Jose Mourinho’s side from striking a deal.

Xabi Alonso learns Enzo Fernandez lesson after poor performance vs Cape Verde

He may have to focus on a future at Stamford Bridge, and has sent a message to Xabi Alonso about how he should not use him next season.

After their narrow 3-2 win over Cape Verde in the World Cup Round of 32, TyCSports handed him just a 5/10, stating that he did not suit playing in a double pivot midfield.

They said: “Scaloni’s flexible double pivot perhaps allows Enzo to push forward more, which is why he can get open with shots on goal or even venture into the box.

“It’s important to understand that sometimes complementary roles help the team take center stage. Today wasn’t his best match, perhaps due to his tendency to overextend himself.”

Argentine fans were not happy with Fernandez’s performance either, as they were given a real scare for what would have been one of the biggest World Cup shocks of all time.

Alonso needs to find a balance with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo

Moises Caicedo has already committed his future to the Blues, and will surely be one of the first names on the teamsheet for them next season.

Chelsea’s quest for a potential Fernandez replacement was going to allow Caicedo to play further forward, with Adam Wharton the leading candidate.

However, that move is only going to take place if the World Cup winner departs, which now gives Alonso a new challenge to balance the midfield better than his predecessors managed to do.

Playing a double pivot is something the Blues boss should look to avoid at all costs, after he struggled alongside Caicedo’s former teammate, Alexis Mac Allister.
