Gary Lineker has claimed he’s not surprised to hear Chelsea reportedly want to sign RB Leipzig and Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol.

Gvardiol, who earns £59,000-a-weeek (Salary Sport), is an exciting young defender that plays in the German Bundesliga.

The 20-year-old’s reputation is now growing positively day by day because of his World Cup performances this winter with Croatia.

90min reported last week that Chelsea are hopeful and optimistic that they’ll be able to sign Gvardiol, which should be very exciting transfer speculation for Blues supporters.

The centre-back has been a defensive rock so far in the World Cup tournament, but Croatia face their toughest test yet when the play Brazil this Friday.

Lineker not surprised Chelsea want Gvardiol

Lineker has made a claim about Chelsea links to the Leipzig centre-half.

“He’s been immensely impressive in the tournament so far. You can see why clubs like Chelsea are interested in him,” Lineker said, during BBC One’s coverage of Japan vs Croatia (5 December).

In fairness, Gvardiol is showing all the attributes to play for a top club in Europe. The fact he’s delivering on a World Cup stage should definitely tempt someone to splash the cash on him.

Gvardiol ticks so many boxes when you’re searching for the modern day centre-back.

He’s proving he can stand firm and deliver old school defending with his strength, reading of the game and aerial dominance. There’s a lot to love about his game when in possession, too.

It’s going to be interesting to see how much longer Leipzig can keep him.

Chelsea have had so much top-quality defenders in the past couple of decades and it’s always the bedrock of any success.
