Erin Cuthbert may be a new name to the world of football but she is rapidly becoming one of the rising stars in the British game. At only 19 years of age, Cuthbert has already shown that she has the potential to reach the very top.
Born in Irvine in Scotland, Cuthbert stepped on to the footballing ladder in 2009 as an 11 year old who was signed by Rangers. She spent five years playing in the various Rangers youth teams, honing her skills and improving on her performances year on year. In 2014, Cuthbert exploded to public attention with a goal she scored playing for the Rangers Under 17’s team against Hibernian in the Under 17’s cup. With the score deadlocked at 0-0, Cuthbert took it upon herself to make the breakthrough; picking the ball up in an innocuous position 30 yards out, she proceeded to go on a mazey dribble, bypassing multiple Hibs players before nonchalantly flicking the ball into the bottom corner. That goal won her Youth Goal of the Year in Scotland and with all the interest that came with that wonderful goal, the biggest Ladies team in Scotland: Glasgow City took notice and signed her in 2015.
Her first season at Glasgow City was stunning. Her and her team won the treble as they added the Scottish Women’s Premier League to the Scottish Premier League Cup and the Scottish Women’s Cup. Cuthbert was a driving force behind all that success and she managed to bag herself 19 goals from an Inside Forward position while also picking up Glasgow City’s Player of the Year award in recognition of her fantastic displays. Cuthbert continued her upwards progression and also enjoyed the 2016 season with Glasgow as they retained the league, only losing once throughout the whole league campaign. Her form led to Chelsea showing an interest and she crossed the border and joined the Blues in January 2017 just before the Spring Series began.
Cuthbert was gently eased into English football during the Spring Series and was used sparingly. Her small amount of playing time didn’t stop her from showing her class however as she got an assist on her debut, after coming off the bench and then scoring a goal on her first start for the club. In total, Cuthbert made 4 starts and 3 substitute appearances and still managed to score 4 goals.
This season so far has seen Cuthbert continue to battle her way for a first team starting position but the youngster is maturing with every appearance and surrounded by the world class players that she trains with every single day, can hope to cement herself in Chelsea history in the years to come.
