'A very good player': Mason Mount raves about Chelsea talent who Tuchel may reportedly sell this summer

Mason Mount has explained he’s impressed by the growth and quality of Chelsea youngster Levi Colwill.

Mount, 23, is a key first-team player at Stamford Bridge that’s a great role model for the Blues academy graduates looking to force their way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans. He developed his game out on several loans before growing into the top-class attacking midfielder he is now.

19-year-old Chelsea defender Colwill, who spent last season out on loan with Huddersfield Town, would surely love to be the next major star out of the academy at Cobham.

The left-footed centre-back is playing and training with the senior group during pre-season in the United States.

However, it’s been reported Tuchel could still actually sell the English teenager in this window. It’s been claimed this month Chelsea are considering selling Colwill amid interest from the likes of Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Southampton.

Mount impressed by Colwill

Chelsea should perhaps take a close listen to Mount before jumping the gun on Colwill’s sale.

The England international thinks he can notice an improvement in the centre-half when comparing him this pre-season to last summer.

“You can see with Levi the valuable experience he has gained going on loan,” said Mount. “That’s something that I experienced and for me, watching him when he trained with us before he went out, I could obviously tell he was a very good player but he needed that experience.

“To go and play in the Championship and to get into a Play-Off Final like I did, it’s a valuable experience that helps you so, so much. I think he has learned so much from that. He has grown as a player, grown as a person and now I definitely think he feels that he can improve us and improve our team. He is going to get an opportunity to really step up and he needs to keep working hard and keep working hard in training.”

Fingers crossed

Let’s hope Colwill does enough in the remainder of pre-season to force his way into Tuchel’s plans for the new season.

The ball-playing centre-back was brilliant last year for a Huddersfield side that eventually lost in the Championship play-off final.

He would be a great option in the Blues squad in the 2022/23 campaign, providing excellent cover to play in the back three.

There’s no doubt he would learn so much shadowing the likes of Thiago Silva and Kalidou Koulibaly, too.
