Cesar Azpilicueta has told The Athletic that he has no regrets over staying at Chelsea for this season.

The club captain was strongly linked with a move to Barcelona over the summer, with all the signs pointing to an exit after a decade at the club.

With the defender having won everything there is on offer at Stamford Bridge, it seemed realistic that he may be willing to pursue things elsewhere.

His departure would have completed an exodus of previously important backline members leaving the club for not much money. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen had already completed their moves to Spain.

However, with back-up to Reece James non-existent without him, Azpilicueta signed a new deal to stay at the club.

A move to Barcelona would have no doubt been a dream for the 33-year-old, however he has since claimed that he is happy with the decision he made to remain in West London.

Chelsea fans will be ecstatic to hear of his desire to continue to represent their club, however will have doubts about the ability he can continue to do so going forwards.

Graham Potter has struggled for a suitable replacement for James when he has been injured this season, which unfortunately has been more often than not in recent months.

However, the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and even Raheem Sterling have struggled when utilised in that role, ultimately limiting from what they have been able to provide for the Blues.

Nevertheless, Azpilicueta will continue to cover for James until at least the end of the season, when Malo Gusto makes the move to Stamford Bridge.
