Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos has described Chelsea’s Thiago Silva as one of the best defenders in the world.

Marquinhos, 27, is the club captain of French giants PSG. Incidentally, the Ligue 1 leaders are in action tonight in the Champions League last-16 against Real Madrid.

Brazilian centre-back Marquinhos formed a great partnership alongside Silva when they played next to each other for PSG. They are still defensive partners on the international stage, though.

Silva ended up leaving France in 2020 and signing for Chelsea.

There were question marks over how much of an impact the veteran centre-half could make in the twilight of his career, but he’s been a colossus at Stamford Bridge.

Aged 37, he’s still one of the first names on Thomas Tuchel’s Blues team sheet.

Marquinhos has paid tribute to his ex-club teammate Silva, who he thinks is still one of the best in the business at his age.

“Thiago showed me the way, he was one of the best defenders in the world and he still is today,” Marquinhos told Telefoot, as quoted by Culture PSG.

Chelsea have two of the world’s best CBs

For certain, Silva’s been one of the best centre-halves across European for well over a decade. Blues midfielder Mateo Kovacic recently described him one of the best of his generation.

English audiences have only been able to watch him in the Premier League for the last 18 months, but he’s barely put a foot wrong in the heart of the Chelsea XI. He definitely belongs in the category of the world’s best defenders still.

In addition, current teammate Antonio Rudiger has arguably been on par with him during the last year.

Chelsea are so fortunate to have the two defensive powerhouses in the same squad, albeit the latter’s contract expires in the summer and there is still no official announcement on any new deal.

Silva is tied down in West London until 2023.
