'Absolutely outstanding': Gary Neville says Chelsea player was brilliant in the 1-1 draw vs Manchester United
Gary Neville picked out Chelsea’s Reece James for huge praise after his dominant performance on Thursday night against Manchester United.
Chelsea left Old Trafford with just a point after a 1-1 draw against Man United, albeit on the balance of play they’ll be extremely disappointed not to win.
The Blues wasted numerous goalscoring opportunities, which has been the one weakness in their season really holding them back from dizzy heights.
Marcos Alonso volleyed in the opener on the hour mark to finally find a way past goalkeeper David De Gea. However, Cristiano Ronaldo equalised within two minutes with his own eye-catching finish.
It means third-placed Chelsea have an eight-point cushion above fifth-placed Tottenham, so are still strong favourites to wrap up a top-four finish this season.
Neville, who was co-commentator of the league contest, picked out England international James for his display.
“Kante’s played well, Alonso’s played well, but I’m giving it to Reece James,” Neville told Sky Sports’ Main Event channel 9:32pm, 28 April) when asked for his man of the match.
“Absolutely outstanding on that right flank. The goal would’ve been the perfect moment for him.”
James dominant at RWB
James was back in the starting XI tonight and it’s clear to see how much he improves the Blues line-up.
The 22-year-old has played some games at centre-half during his return to the side, which highlights how good he is without the ball.
However, he was even more impressive at Old Trafford in the right wing-back slot.
He created so many opportunities for his teammates that just couldn’t convert the chances.
There’s some debate over what’s the best way to use Chelsea’s academy graduate and it’s hard to argue against him starting every match at wing-back when you see what he offers going forward.
Thomas Tuchel said earlier this week he wishes he could have three versions of James at his disposal. We wouldn’t argue with 10 outfield players like James, though.
Real Madrid are reportedly admirers of James but they can only look not touch.
