'Another option': Joe Cole suggests Potter now needs to consider using Chelsea player with one start this season

Joe Cole has suggested Graham Potter now needs to play Chelsea’s Denis Zakaria more often.

Zakaria, 25, made his first start and first appearance of the season in Chelsea colours this week.

The midfielder has been overlooked by the Blues since he joined them on loan from Juventus in the summer, but he finally got an opportunity to feature on Wednesday night.

It was pretty much a dream debut from him, scoring the winning goal in Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

Mason Mount hailed the “unbelievable” midweek performance from his teammate. He received widespread praise from all over, too.

Denis Zakaria needs to play

Pundit and former Chelsea star Joe Cole highlighted a superb individual performance from Zakaria against Dinamo Zagreb.

He thinks the Switzerland international now gives Chelsea boss Potter a much-needed option to play in the centre of the park.

Cole told BT Sport: “I thought he was excellent. I thought he got around the pitch. He was the one your eyes went to because it was his first game… He was getting around, putting his tackles in, and breaking up the play. To get a goal would have been a bonus. It’s now another option for Chelsea, especially with [N’Golo] Kante being out for so long. It’s a needed option.”

Will Potter be tempted to start Zakaria on the weekend?

It was a really eye-catching performance on his Blues debut, proving that he needs more chances to show what he can do.

However, the lack of game minutes and match sharpness would mean it’s a big risk starting him in this Sunday’s huge Premier League showdown with table toppers Arsenal.

In our view, the likes of Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are more likely to start ahead of him at home to Arsenal.

It’s exciting to think we can contribute moving forward, though.
