'Awful': BBC pundit tears into one individual mistake from Chelsea player during 4-1 Brentford defeat
Chelsea returned after the international break in the worst possible way today by suffering a heavy defeat to Brentford.
The Blues were stunned with a 4-1 home loss at Stamford Bridge against their London rivals, who actually came from behind to win the Premier League contest.
Antonio Rudiger’s great strike from distance actually put Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead at the start of the second-half.
However, the visitors responded with four unanswered goals to earn three points. Vitaly Janelt (two), Christian Eriksen and Yoane Wissa all scored on a historic day for massive underdogs Brentford.
It’s a game Chelsea need to forget quickly, especially because they face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night.
There were so many uncharacteristic individual slip ups from the hosts.
In particular, BBC pundit Martin Keown teared into an error from Rudiger for Brentford’s fourth goal late on.
The 29-year-old centre-back completely mishit his attempted clearance in the penalty box, which landed at the feet of Wissa to fire in his goal and add more pain to the Stamford Bridge crowd.
“It’s an awful clearance from Rudiger. Everything Brentford hit goes into the back of the net, but Rudiger hasn’t come out of this with any glory. It’s a panicky clearance from one of the best defenders in Europe,” Keown said on BBC’s Football Focus (4:49pm, 2 April).
Chelsea need to forget shocking day at the office
Rudiger will be disappointed with his individual effort, but it’s a really poor performance that the entire group need to own.
In fact, German centre-back Rudiger is one of the players with credit in the bank that can’t remain faultless in every match.
Hopefully, Tuchel is able to quickly lift the squad after a shock result.
There was a 5-2 defeat to West Brom last April that had plenty of similarities to today’s result, so hopefully Chelsea can now bounce back like they did then.
