Ashley Williams praised Wesley Fofana yesterday during Chelsea’s win against Leeds United.

Fofana’s debut season at Stamford Bridge has been wrecked by injuries, so he was making just his sixth Chelsea appearance this weekend.

The 22-year-old defender did manage to remind everyone on Saturday why the Blues coughed up £70million to sign him from Leicester City last summer, though.

He scored a fantastic second-half header to give Graham Potter’s side a 1-0 home victory over Leeds.

Chelsea picked up their first win in the Premier League since 15 January against Crystal Palace, which will hopefully be a platform for more positive results moving forward.

BBC pundit Ashley Williams was full of praise for Fofana yesterday.

In particular, he loved the way Chelsea’s young centre-back came alive in the box to score his header from a Ben Chilwell corner.

“He’s a top class player…That is a super header. Sometimes, as a defender, you go up and go through the motions. He goes and attacks it. He’s got more about him than everyone else in the box,” Williams told BBC Sport.

Brendan Rodgers previously tipped Fofana to be a “world class defender” after coaching him at Leicester City.

It was a great reminder yesterday of why there is so much hype around him.

Fofana was definitely Chelsea’s standout individual in the win against Leeds.

There’s still so much more the Blues need to do when it comes to creating and scoring goals, but the defence is looking fairly firm.

It’s definitely a big blow to lose Thiago Silva to injury for the next few weeks, but Potter’s decision to switch to a back three appeared to work well against Leeds.

Fofana, who received big praise from Potter after Saturday’s result, did catch the eye as right-sided centre-back in the back three.

The French youngster is extremely comfortable when he gets the ball to feet. His aggression and aerial threat is a real bonus, too.
