Alan Shearer has been left praising Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic following his recent outing.

Shearer has included Chelsea’s 27-year-old in his regular Premier League Team of the Week segment.

The Blues recorded a thrilling 2-2 draw at home to Liverpool on Sunday in a league showdown, with Thomas Tuchel’s men fighting from two goals down to earn a point.

Kovacic, alongside midfielder partner N’Golo Kante, bossed large spells of the contest against Liverpool.

The Croatian central midfielder was in the headlines for his stunning goal, too. He produced a superb volley from the edge of the box that was hailed as “magnificent” by Ian Wright.

Kovacic has missed several games of the season through injury and illness, but is now beginning to find his rhythm again after a few matches back in the team. It’s brilliant news for his manager Tuchel that he’s back at his disposal again.

Shearer has waxed lyrical about the talented midfielder:

“Brilliant in every department and scored a Goal of the Season contender. The best player in a high-quality match,” Shearer wrote.

Best unit of Chelsea CMs?

Kovacic, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are Chelsea’s three senior central midfielders.

They are an incredible unit at the disposal of manager Tuchel, but are they the club’s best ever combination of recent memory?

Jose Mourinho’s title-winning squad from the 2014/15 season called upon the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic and Ramires.

Meanwhile, many Blues fans will remember further back when they were fortunate enough to have the likes of Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack and Michael Essien in the same squad together.

It makes sense to lean towards any combination that includes arguably the club’s best ever player in Lampard. However, this current crop pushes them very closely and have a Champions League on their CV.
