'Can’t see them both being there’: BBC pundit thinks Chelsea man will leave if Lukaku is at the Bridge next season

Chris Sutton suggested that Thomas Tuchel might be forced to leave Chelsea if Romelu Lukaku is still on board in the summer.

Speaking on the BBC Monday Night Club, Sutton predicted a showdown between the two major forces at Stamford Bridge once the campaign concludes.

An unwanted feeling around Chelsea

There is certainly an uneasy air surrounding the Champions League holders as they embark on their defence of the continental title.

After another largely unconvincing win on the weekend, the negative aspects of the performance certainly outweighed any of the positives.

Lukaku’s lackluster, virtually non-existent exhibition certainly warranted some inspection.

He probably doesn’t need reminding, but the pricy striker only managed a mere seven touches against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

That set a new Premier League record for the fewest interactions with a football since Opta started recording such data back in 2003/04.

Who wins out of Tuchel and Lukaku?

Conflicting opinions have since arisen about whether Lukaku’s lack of involvement is a personal problem or down to those around him.

Tuchel certainly didn’t want to blame the number nine’s ghostly display on his own methods or approach to the match.

But pointing the finger simply won’t resolve the glaring issues staring Chelsea’s club-record signing in the face.

Change is needed rather drastically if the European champions are to move in the right direction once again.

According to Sutton, the only solution might be for Tuchel to walk away from his project and allow another manager to try his luck with Lukaku.

“His body language, I don’t know whether he looks heavy, if I’m being totally honest. He is a player who’s carrying a burden and that doesn’t suit anybody,” said Sutton on the struggling centre-forward.

“Tuchel has his system and is saying Lukaku has to fit to my system. But at this moment in time, we have an unhappy player and the manager is going to be unhappy with him.

“What’s going to give at the end of the season? I can’t see them both being there next season. Something has to give.”

Tuchel’s triumphs outweigh Romelu

If Chelsea fans were given the option of removing Lukaku or Tuchel, a majority would pick the latter.

The German coach has done so much for the organisation since taking over from Frank Lampard last January.

Meanwhile, Lukaku hasn’t really justified at all the huge sum Roman Abramovich forked out for his signature in August.

Arguably, Chelsea are a better side without the Belgian international.

They are definitely a better side with Tuchel standing on the touchline, that’s for sure.
