Darren Bent says £33m Chelsea player isn’t good enough in possession

Darren Bent has delivered a tough verdict on the form of Chelsea’s Kalidou Koulibaly, who he thinks is seriously “struggling” right now.

Koulibaly, 31, is getting an extended run in the Blues starting line-up as the main centre-back next to Thiago Silva.

However, the £33million defender is having a really tough first season in English football.

The Senegal international has been regarded as one of the world’s top centre-halves in recent years due to his form at Napoli, but he looks a shadow of that player at Stamford Bridge.

Kalidou Koulibaly under scrutiny

TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent has picked out Chelsea’s No.26 for big criticism. In particular, he highlighted his passing and quality on the ball as a weak area of his game.

When talking about Koulibaly, Bent told talkSPORT: “I don’t think he’s suited to the Premier League.

“He’s not good enough on the ball. He doesn’t see the picture. He doesn’t sense danger. It’s completely different the Italian league to the Premier League. I think he’s struggling.”

In fairness, Koulibaly does merit a lot of the criticism heading his way right now.

There’s definitely a nervousness in the Chelsea backline right now, especially in the channel where Koulibaly finds himself both on and off the ball.

It’s been claimed members of the Blues staff are puzzled by the defender’s performances this season, which is exactly the same for the entire fanbase that were so excited when he joined.

It will be hard for him to get back to his very best if he keeps making these basic errors that are being magnified.
