‘Does this all day long’: Graeme Souness really impressed by £24m Chelsea player after today’s win

Graeme Souness was left really impressed by today’s performance from Chelsea player Marcos Alonso against West Ham.

Chelsea, who had lost their previous three home matches at Stamford Bridge, secured a much-needed 1-0 victory against West Ham.

It was a contest that lacked drama for large stages, but it came to life inside the final 10 minutes.

First of all, Jorginho saw his penalty saved after Craig Dawson was sent off for fouling Romelu Lukaku in the box.

However, Christian Pulisic scored a late winner in the 90th minute to secure an important three points to strengthen third spot in the Premier League table.

Pundit Souness believes that Alonso, whose cross assisted Pulisic’s goal, stood out in a positive way with his performance at the Bridge.

“Great athleticism from Alonso. He does this all day long. When he gets there, he generally delivers,” Souness told Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (3:55pm, 24 April).

Sky Sports’ co-commentator Gary Neville was equally impressed with what he saw from Alonso in the weekend’s London derby.

Great Chelsea cover

Alonso may drop the odd poor performance sometimes, but overall he’s an excellent member in the Blues squad.

He’s been a vital figure in the side with 40 appearances this season across all competitions, which has included three goals and five assists from left wing-back.

There’s been added responsibility on his shoulders due to the long-term injury Ben Chilwell sustained in November. He’s dealt with it really well in the main, though.

The £24million full-back showed against West Ham what he can contribute in an attacking sense.
