ESPN pundit Craig Burley believes Graham Potter is regretting his decision to take the job as Chelsea manager earlier this season.
Chelsea and, consequently, Potter are in a difficult spot at the moment after a string of poor results in the last few months.
They have just one win from their last nine matches in all competitions, sit 10th in the Premier League table — 19 points behind league leaders Arsenal, and are already out of the League Cup and the FA Cup.
Potter shares some of the blame, of course, but the club’s extensive injury list has likely played a bigger part.
While the Chelsea ownership group has been trying to help by bringing in new players to reinforce the squad, but these signings often need time to adapt, and the club need positive results immediately.
A number of Blues fans have also begun losing their patience and made it clear by chanting Potter’s predecessor Thomas Tuchel’s name in the stands during the last few games.
Considering the predicament Potter is in now, Burley thinks the Blues manager wishes he never left Brighton.
“He’s like a rabbit in the headlights at the moment, isn’t he?” Burley told ESPN FC when asked about the situation Potter is in.
“He’s got players out injured, players coming in, crazy transfers, people calling for his head, can’t get a result, and is expected to beat Palace [on Sunday]… Will that happen? I don’t know.
“I bet he’s wishing he never took the job now, seriously.”
Life may have been a lot easier for Potter if he had stayed at Brighton, but there is a reason why he agreed to take over at Chelsea.
As Potter himself pointed out last week, he has the full support of the club owners despite the results and will likely keep his job.
He was fully aware that he was “taking a risk” when signing the contract with Chelsea, but the five-year deal suggests Chelsea would give him time to build the team.
