Rio Ferdinand tips Chelsea youngster Levi Colwill as someone that may be a future star.

Colwill, who’s out on loan with Brighton this season, is yet to make his first-team debut for Chelsea.

However, the 19-year-old is a highly-rated defender to come through the academy ranks at Cobham, and many Blues supporters are very excited about his future.

The left-footed centre-half massively impressed in the 2021/22 campaign during a loan with Huddersfield Town in the Championship.

He’s now spending this season on loan with top-flight club Brighton, which should definitely help bridge the gap to the Chelsea squad.

Rio Ferdinand tips Levi Colwill

When discussing talented English youngsters, Ferdinand said: “Colwill at Brighton has got a real chance. Left-footed centre-back. He’s not that young but I’m talking of players that are on the peripheral of establishing themselves as Premier League players before they are an international.”

You must be doing a lot of things correct as a defender if Ferdinand singles you out as a future star.

He’s only made five appearances so far in Brighton colours, with the Seagulls defence proving very difficult to break into.

However, he was handed his first Premier League start on the weekend in a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi described the Chelsea-owned youngster as “fantastic” after his individual performance.

With the current problems in Chelsea’s defence, you can understand why some of the Blues fanbase already think Colwill could be a great option at Stamford Bridge in the near future.

For now, the English teenager should be allowed to focus on his loan with Brighton.

It’s going to be no easy feat breaking up a centre-back combination of Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster, which is one of the most dependable across the Premier League.

However, De Zerbi’s comments seem very encouraging and let’s hope he can get a fast start post-World Cup.
