Pundit Paul Merson has firmly warned Chelsea player Mason Mount that he needs to start scoring more goals.

Mount enjoyed a really impressive season last year, scoring 13 goals and making 16 assists across all competitions. He netted 11 of his goals in the Premier League, too.

However, the 23-year-old attacking midfielder has had a fairly quiet start to the new campaign.

The England international is currently sat with zero goals and zero assists from the opening five league games, as he struggles in a forward line at Stamford Bridge that looks uncertain.

Mount needs to start scoring

Merson insists that Chelsea’s playmaker must start getting on the scoresheet more often.

“Mason Mount has got to start scoring goals – he needs to add that to his game. He’s a big part of the Chelsea side, and he gets a lot of touches. He didn’t score a lot last season but Chelsea were winning, and everybody was praising him. They’re not winning right now, and you go, “Wait a minute! Mount’s struggling!” He’s got to score more goals in the Premier League,” Merson wrote.

Mount gets into a lot of positions high up the pitch in Thomas Tuchel’s system, so he’s got to justify his spot by scoring consistently.

He’s started all five league matches so far to highlight the manager’s trust in him, but it’ll be interesting to see if he’s selected to start again in this Saturday’s match at home to West Ham.

Let’s hope he can find a purple patch of form when it comes to his finishing because he often does a lot of top work off the ball.

New-look side

It’s going to be interesting to see how Mount copes moving forward this year with new teammates Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling.

Most fans expect the aforementioned duo to be key players in the line-up when fit, so where does Mount fit into the attacking set up?

In truth, a lot of the Englishman’s best work is done when he drops into deeper midfield pockets.
