'Has got to start': Jason Cundy demands Tuchel promotes 'brilliant' player to XI after Southampton defeat
Jason Cundy says “brilliant” Chelsea youngster Armando Broja must start games for the club moving forward after yesterday’s crushing defeat at Southampton.
Chelsea’s rocky start to the new season continued on Tuesday night by losing 2-1 away to Southampton, which leaves them with just seven points from their opening five Premier League games.
In-form Blues attacker Raheem Sterling put the visitors ahead at St Mary’s before manager Thomas Tuchel watched his side crumble. Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong responded with goals for Southampton to earn them three league points.
Cundy says Broja must start
Pundit and Chelsea fan Cundy insisted after the Saints result that Tuchel needs to promote Broja to the starting XI.
Broja, 20, had a lively cameo from the bench during the second half at Southampton by trying to inject something at the top end of the pitch.
The centre-forward couldn’t carve out anything concrete, but showed a lot more energy and directness than the teammates he replaced.
“Broja, can I just say how brilliant he looked when he came on. Broja has got to start. He (Tuchel) has got to start a proper centre-forward,” Cundy told talkSPORT (10:33pm, 30 August).
No excuse for Saturday
Surely, there’s no reason for Broja not to be bumped up into the starting line-up this weekend.
Chelsea desperately need a response and a result when they host rivals West Ham on Saturday afternoon at Stamford Bridge in their next league match.
Kai Havertz and Mason Mount have both failed to score or assist in the opening five matches of the season, so surely something has got to give with the team selection.
Broja is with the first-team squad now this campaign and fully deserves a chance to start against West Ham.
TalkSPORT’s Darren Ambrose said last month he’d play Broja over Havertz, which is a piece of advice Tuchel should hear based on recent form.
