‘Hasn’t been great’: TalkSPORT pundit explains why 22-year-old Chelsea man has been left out of England squad

TalkSPORT’s Darren Bent has claimed that he can understand why Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher has been left out of the England squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures.

The international break is Gareth Southgate’s final chance to look at players before he names his squad for this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

Gallagher had previously earned his way into the Three Lions’ squad following an extremely successful loan spell at Crystal Palace, which also earnt him a place back at Chelsea.

However, he has endured a difficult start to the campaign at Stamford Bridge, as he’s been frequently played out of position under old manager Thomas Tuchel.

His tough beginning of the season was summed up well by his appearance against Leicester, where he was sent off in the first half leaving the Blues a mountain to climb.

Bent understands Gallagher’s omission

Bent has claimed he understands why this has led to Southgate electing to not choose him this time around, with the impressive performances of the likes of Jude Bellingham just too good an opportunity to miss.

He said: “Conor Gallagher, his form at the start of the season hasn’t been great, he’s made mistakes, I can understand why he’s been left out.

“As I said, it’s a big opportunity for the likes of Jude Bellingham. Hopefully he starts and we can see what he’s all about.”

Bellingham is a player whose future has been linked before to a move to Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea among the host of elite teams ready to make a move for him next summer if he becomes available.

As for Gallagher, a new manager in Graham Potter could give him the opportunity for a clean slate for this season, with him potentially being able to feature in a role similar to where he played for Palace.
