'He's not in sync': Paul Merson thinks 28-year-old Chelsea player is struggling to connect with teammates

Paul Merson claims Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku is not in sync with his teammates right now on the football pitch.

Lukaku, 28, is currently enduring a frustrating run out of Thomas Tuchel’s preferred line-up.

The Belgian forward’s been getting plenty of minutes from the bench in the past couple of months, including a late cameo in the weekend’s FA Cup semi-final win against Crystal Palace.

Unfortunately, he missed a golden opportunity to score when he hit the post from inside the box.

The left-footed target man has 12 goals across all competitions this season, but is playing second fiddle to Kai Havertz right now in the striker position.

Merson has pinned a lot of Lukaku’s struggles down to the chemistry he has with his teammates.

“Even when Lukaku came on in the semi-final on Sunday, he’s just not in sync with what Chelsea are trying to do,” Merson wrote.

“In the last five minutes at Wembley, the ball went across the six-yard box three times. They are three tap-ins, and he could have had a hat-trick. However, he’s pulling out to the penalty spot and another one was easier to score than miss.

“I just don’t think he’s singing off the same hymn sheet at the moment. It’s just a situation where he’s not in sync with his teammates and it is showing on the pitch.”

Chelsea much more fluid with Havertz

For certain, the Blues attack gels together a lot nicer when Havertz leads the line and shows his great movement across the frontline.

There’s no denying Lukaku’s a top striker when you look at his imperious CV of goalscoring.

However, Blues manager Thomas Tuchel has been unable this season to really find a way of getting the best out of him.

It could be an opportunity tonight to recall Lukaku against Arsenal in the Premier League, which is a fixture he scored in earlier in the campaign.

It’s going to take quite the turnaround for the forward to break back into the best X in time for next month’s FA Cup final against Liverpool, though.
